Below is a device that greatly eases dog-toenail clipping. Specifically, it is a thimble (100) that fits over the shear(22) and adjacent parts of a Resco clipper (20). The thimble is secured by a tiny dab of gum (24) under the rear edge.

It helps place a toenail in the shear and limits the length of toenail sheared

Newer Resco clippers(below) with painted handles have screws (red) that stand too tall and interfere with placement of the clipper guide. To remedy that, simply deposit viscous Superglue at the clipper's side seams (green) and, after drying, remove the screws.
